Il San Pietro di Positano.
Perched on a jagged promontory just outside the main bustle of town, Il San Pietro is an architectural feat carved directly into the Amalfi Coast limestone. Opened in 1970 and still managed by the founding Cinque family, the hotel is defined by its verticality; a private glass elevator descends 380 feet through the cliffside to reach a secluded pebble beach and a sea-level tennis court. The 57 rooms are individually styled with hand-painted Vietri ceramics and private terraces that orient every guest toward the Mediterranean. While the Michelin-starred Zass provides a formal culinary anchor, the hotel maintains a serene, adult-oriented atmosphere bolstered by organic gardens and an infinity pool that seems to spill into the horizon. It remains the coast’s most storied hideaway.
