Forte di Bard.
Commanding the narrowest point of the Aosta Valley, Forte di Bard is a massive 19th-century military complex built atop a rocky spur with roots dating back to the 5th century. After famously stalling Napoleon’s army for two weeks in 1800, the fortress was razed and later rebuilt into the multi-tiered limestone behemoth seen today. Accessing the summit is a highlight in itself; a series of futuristic glass elevators glide up the cliffside, offering panoramic views of the medieval village below. Now a sprawling cultural hub, the interior houses the interactive Museum of the Alps and dedicated spaces for contemporary art and photography. Beyond the galleries, the site functions as a vertical "cultural theme park" with a boutique hotel and a courtyard that hosts open-air performances.
