Glendalough.
Glendalough is a starkly beautiful glacial valley in the Wicklow Mountains, defined by two dark lakes and the remarkably intact ruins of a 6th-century monastic settlement. Founded by St. Kevin, the site features a soaring 30-meter round tower and stone churches that serve as a quiet testament to Ireland’s early Christian history. Beyond the masonry, the landscape transitions into a playground for hikers. Nine waymarked trails spider through the valley, ranging from flat strolls along the Lower Lake to the more demanding Spinc loop, which skirts the top of sheer cliffs for panoramic views of the Upper Lake. Notable landmarks like the Poulanass Waterfall and the cliffside cave known as St. Kevin’s Bed are tucked into the hillsides, accessible via boardwalks and forest paths. It is a place where history feels immovable against a backdrop of deep green oak woods and roaming deer.
