Mount Bromo.
Rising out of a vast volcanic plain known as the Sea of Sand, Mount Bromo is one of Indonesia’s most arresting natural spectacles. Located within the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, this active 2,329-meter volcano is defined by its dramatic, moon-like setting rather than sheer height. Visitors typically cross the ash-strewn caldera by jeep before ascending a concrete stairway that leads directly to the steaming crater rim. From the classic sunrise viewpoints, Bromo’s smoking cone cuts a stark profile alongside the rugged Mount Batok, with the towering Mount Semeru framing the background. Deeply tied to local Hindu tradition, the volcano is named after Brahma, and a small shrine to Ganesha sits near the edge, underscoring the site's enduring spiritual significance.
