Church of St. Spyridon.
Located in the heart of Corfu’s Old Town, this 1580s basilica is the island's most significant spiritual landmark. Its soaring bell tower, the highest in the Ionian Islands, mimics the design of San Giorgio dei Greci in Venice and serves as a permanent compass point for the surrounding narrow streets. While the exterior remains austere, the interior is intensely decorative, featuring a marble iconostasis and a ceiling divided into gold-framed panels depicting the life of Saint Spyridon. To the right of the altar, the saint’s relics are kept in a double sarcophagus of silver and red velvet. The church’s historical weight is visible in details like the Romanov coat of arms above the door and the heavy silver lamps gifted by the Venetian Senate in gratitude for the island’s protection.
