Grand Eléphant et Galerie de les Machines de l’île.

Situated in the former shipyards of the Île de Nantes, this mechanical bestiary brings the industrial heritage of the city to life through a lens of steampunk fantasy. The centerpiece is the Grand Éléphant, a four-story-tall mechanical marvel of steel and wood that carries up to 50 passengers on a rhythmic trek across the quays, spraying mist from its trunk as its gears churn visibly. Inside the Galerie des Machines, the experience is more laboratory than museum; visitors watch engineers test giant mechanical spiders, herons, and ants, often participating in live demonstrations. The aesthetic pays direct homage to the visionary worlds of Nantes-born Jules Verne and the sketches of Leonardo da Vinci. It’s a rare site where high-level engineering is used purely for whimsy, offering a tactile look at how these massive kinetic sculptures are built and operated.
