Musée National des Douanes.
Housed in the majestic 18th-century Hôtel des Fermes du Roi on the iconic Place de la Bourse, this unique museum occupies the very vaulted stone hall where Bordeaux’s customs clearance actually took place for centuries. As the only institution in France dedicated to the history of customs and border control, it steers clear of dry administrative archives. Instead, it offers a fascinating look at trade, taxation, and smuggling through a quirky 13,000-object collection that includes historic uniforms, seized contraband, a giant prehistoric Aepyornis egg, and Claude Monet’s painting *Cabane des douaniers*. Recently renovated, the museum brings the cat-and-mouse game between officers and smugglers to life. Non-French speakers should grab an audio guide to fully appreciate the exhibits.
