Chartres Cathedral.
Chartres Cathedral, a masterpiece of French Gothic architecture, was constructed mainly between 1194 and 1220 and is celebrated for its architectural unity and innovative design. Its impressive flying buttresses allow for soaring interiors and an abundance of stained glass, boasting nearly 2,600 square meters of original windows from both the Romanesque and Gothic periods—making it the largest collection of its kind in any cathedral. The cathedral features ornate sculptural portals, including the renowned Royal Portal, which depict biblical stories and mark the shift from Romanesque to Gothic art. Historically significant, it stands on the site of several predecessors and was consecrated in 1260. Well-preserved despite past fires, it remains a UNESCO World Heritage Site and continues to attract admirers for its beauty and spiritual depth.
