Chantier Médiéval de Guédelon.
Deep in the forests of Burgundy, Guédelon is not a restored ruin but an active, ongoing construction site where a 13th-century castle is being built entirely from scratch. Since 1997, a dedicated team of stonemasons, carpenters, blacksmiths, and rope makers has worked using only authentic medieval techniques, tools, and materials. Visitors can wander the forest clearing to watch these artisans at work, climb completed spiral staircases, and chat with craftspeople as they hand-hew timber and forge iron. Because the fortress evolves year by year, the experience feels like a dynamic scientific experiment rather than a frozen museum. It is a rare, hands-on lesson in living history that easily fills half a day; just consider bringing a picnic to bypass the busy on-site tavern.
