Makan – Egyptian Center for Culture and Arts.
Makan, the Egyptian Center for Culture and Arts, is a compact, high-ceilinged sanctuary in Cairo’s Bulaq district dedicated to the preservation of the country’s disappearing folk traditions. Established in 2002, the venue functions as both a research archive and an intimate performance space where Egypt’s intangible heritage is kept alive. It is best known for its Wednesday night Zar rituals—a rare opportunity to witness Mazaher, an ensemble of primarily women performers who lead a rhythmic, trance-like musical healing ceremony once common across the Nile Valley. The programming extends to Nubian melodies and Romani songs, providing a raw, unpolished alternative to the city’s commercial music scene. With very limited seating, the atmosphere is personal and focused, prioritizing cultural dialogue over spectacle.
