Boiling Lake.
Hidden deep within the UNESCO-listed Morne Trois Pitons National Park, Dominica's Boiling Lake is the world’s second-largest flooded fumarole. Heated by molten rock below, this grey-blue cauldron bubbles constantly, shrouded in a thick cloud of steam. Reaching it is a serious expedition rather than a casual stroll. The demanding 13-kilometer round-trip trek takes upwards of six hours, guiding hikers through dense rainforest and into the Valley of Desolation—a stark, otherworldly landscape of active steam vents, hot sulfur springs, and multicolored mineral pools. Because the trail is steep, muddy, and often unmarked through the volcanic terrain, hiring a local guide from the starting point of Laudat is highly recommended. It is a grueling but unforgettable encounter with the earth’s raw power.
