Cisternerne.
Deep beneath the grass of Søndermarken Park, this former subterranean reservoir offers one of Copenhagen’s most disorienting and atmospheric art experiences. Built in the mid-19th century to hold 16 million liters of drinking water, the vaulted brick chambers have since evolved into a "dripstone cave" where natural stalactites cling to the ceiling. There are no white walls or traditional galleries here; instead, the 4,300-square-meter space functions as a sensory void with 100% humidity and a constant chill. Each year, a single site-specific installation is commissioned to inhabit the darkness, using the unique acoustics and damp environment to create immersive works that feel inseparable from the architecture. It is a place of total digital detox where mobile signals die and time slows down, accessed via glass pyramids that mark the descent into the deep.
