Castillo de Salgar.
Perched on a cliff overlooking the Caribbean Sea just 20 minutes from Barranquilla, Castillo de Salgar is a heavily repurposed 1848 fortress built over the ruins of an old Spanish fort. Over the decades, this imposing structure transitioned from a defensive outpost and prison to a customs hub, a school, and eventually a restored cultural landmark. Today, the yellow-walled castle operates as an event space and upscale restaurant rather than a static museum. Visitors come to wander its corridors, browse the on-site library and art gallery, and catch dramatic coastal views from the terrace. Easily reached via a scenic coastal road popular with local cyclists, it offers a breezy, historic alternative to the crowded beach resorts nearby, free from city noise.
