Niagara Falls Whirlpool Aero Car.
Suspended 250 feet above the Niagara River, the Whirlpool Aero Car is a rare piece of kinetic history. Designed by Spanish engineer Leonardo Torres Quevedo and operational since 1916, this antique cable car is the only one of its kind left in the world. The open-ended, red-and-yellow carriage glides along six steel cables, carrying passengers on a 10-minute round trip across the massive basin where the river makes a sharp, counterclockwise turn. Because of the gorge’s geography, the car actually crosses the international border four times mid-flight, though no passport is required to return to the Canadian side. It is a slow, rhythmic crossing that prioritizes vertigo over speed, offering a direct view of the Class 6 whitewater rapids and the mesmerizing teal vortex below. Note that the experience involves about 80 stairs and standing room only, keeping the focus on the raw, unshielded perspective of the whirlpool’s power.
