Merchant Tavern.
Housed in a former bank building in downtown St. John’s, The Merchant Tavern is the more approachable, high-energy sibling to the city’s famed (and now-retired) Raymonds. The space leans into its industrial bones with soaring ceilings, wood-and-iron accents, and an open kitchen that anchors the room. Under the direction of Jeremy Charles and Jeremy Bonia, the menu focuses on elevated comfort food that prioritizes Newfoundland’s rugged pantry. Expect raw bar platters loaded with local whelks and scallops alongside hearty mains like fish and chips or house-made pasta. The beverage program is equally sharp, featuring "proper" cocktails and a curated wine list. For a more intimate vibe, look for the private dining room tucked inside the building’s original vintage bank vault.
