Kompong Phluk offers a striking look at life shaped entirely by the dramatic rise and fall of the Tonle Sap Lake. Located about 20 kilometers southeast of Siem Reap, this working fishing commune is defined by towering stilt houses built six to nine meters above the ground. During the wet season, the water rises to the doorsteps, turning the community into a floating village; in the dry months, the water recedes to reveal a labyrinth of soaring wooden pillars. Visitors typically explore by boat, navigating the village waterways and drifting through the surrounding flooded mangrove forest.
