Boyana Church.
Boyana Church, situated on the outskirts of Sofia, is a standout medieval Orthodox church celebrated for its stunning 13th-century frescoes, which are pivotal in European art history. Constructed over three distinct periods, it features an original eastern church from the late 10th or early 11th century, embellished in the 13th century under Sebastocrator Kaloyan, and a later 19th-century addition. The frescoes, created in 1259, showcase 89 scenes and around 240 human figures, representing one of Europe’s most significant collections of medieval art. Surrounded by serene forests and a picturesque lake, this well-preserved monument, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1979, offers visitors a rich cultural experience amidst beautiful natural scenery, encouraging exploration and reflection.
