Framed by the dramatic peaks of the Dois Irmãos mountains, Ipanema Beach is a two-kilometer stretch of golden sand that serves as Rio’s ultimate social stage. Immortalized by the birth of bossa nova, this iconic coastline is divided by numbered lifeguard towers (*postos*), each attracting its own distinct subculture of locals, from the trendy crowd at Posto 9 to surfers near Arpoador rock. On any given day, the sand is alive with games of footvolley, the scent of grilling *queijo coalho*, and vendors selling cold mate. On Sundays, the adjacent Avenida Vieira Souto closes to cars, transforming the beachfront into a massive paved playground for cyclists and strollers. It all culminates at dusk, when crowds gather on the rocks at Arpoador to watch the sunset and applaud as the sun slips below the horizon.
