The Big Tree.
Known locally as *Muri kunguluwa* ("the tree that roars"), the Sagole Baobab is South Africa's largest living baobab and a monumental force of nature. Located in the Venda region near the South Africa–Botswana border, this ancient giant stands out for its staggering scale, featuring a single, intact trunk measuring over 10 meters across and a crown that spreads nearly 40 meters wide. Estimated to be around 2,000 years old, the tree has survived the collapses that claimed other historic baobabs, making its preserved, sculptural form even more remarkable. Beyond its sheer botanical presence, the tree serves as a thriving habitat, hosting a resident breeding colony of rare mottled spinetails. Visiting this protected Champion Tree is a raw, uncomplicated encounter with one of the continent's oldest living organisms.
