Taktsang Monastery.

Clinging to a sheer cliff face some 3,000 meters above the Paro Valley, Paro Taktsang—popularly known as the Tiger’s Nest—is Bhutan’s most iconic Buddhist site. The monastery is anchored around a series of caves where the 8th-century guru Padmasambhava is said to have meditated after arriving on the back of a flying tigress. Originally constructed in 1692 and meticulously restored after a devastating fire in 1998, the complex consists of four main temples with gilded roofs, interconnected by steps carved directly into the rock. Reaching this active pilgrimage site is half the experience, requiring a strenuous two-to-three-hour uphill hike through pine forests, punctuated by a ridge-side cafe. It is a rare destination where the arduous physical journey, ancient legend, and gravity-defying architecture completely merge.
