Chimi Lhakhang.
Set on a round hillock above the scenic paddy fields of Punakha, Chimi Lhakhang is a 15th-century Buddhist monastery with a highly unusual legacy. Founded by Ngawang Chogyal and blessed by the eccentric saint Drukpa Kunley—the "Divine Madman"—the temple is Bhutan’s primary pilgrimage site for fertility. The journey begins with a pleasant half-hour walk from the road, passing through a rural landscape of mustard and rice fields where local houses are famously adorned with graphic phallus paintings to ward off evil. Inside, the temple remains an active place of devotion rather than a sterile monument. Here, monks continue to bless hopeful parents with a wooden phallus and help families name newborns using a traditional bamboo stick lottery, offering a rare window into living Bhutanese folklore.
