Drukgyel Dzong.

Drukgyel Dzong offers a rare look at Bhutan’s military past, standing as a protected ruin rather than a polished monument. Built in 1649 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal to commemorate a victory over invading Tibetan forces, this fortress in the upper Paro valley served strictly as a defensive outpost rather than an administrative center. A devastating fire in the 1950s destroyed its timber structures, leaving behind a striking archaeological landscape of stone and rammed-earth walls. Visitors can easily trace the layout of the fortified stronghold, from its watchtowers to its strategic position on the ridge. On clear days, the dramatic, rugged ruins frame spectacular views of Mount Chomolhari, blending Bhutanese resilience with the raw beauty of the Himalayas.
