Bois du Cazier.
Built on the site of a former coal mine, Bois du Cazier is a sprawling 26-hectare industrial complex that serves as both a museum and a solemn memorial. While it preserves the mechanical history of Wallonia's mining and steel industries, the site is defined by the 1956 tragedy that claimed 262 lives. The interpretation center handles this history with gravity, using personal stories and artifacts to document the lives of the immigrant workers who fueled the region. Beyond the shafts, the Glass Museum showcases Belgian craftsmanship from the 19th century to the present. The experience is balanced by the surrounding landscape; three repurposed slagheaps now feature hiking trails and lookout points, offering a green, panoramic perspective over the industrial heart of Charleroi.
