Stift St. Florian.
As one of the world’s oldest operational monasteries, Stift St. Florian is a sprawling masterpiece of Baroque design that has housed Augustinian Canons since 1071. While the architecture is a collaboration of masters like Carlo Antonio Carlone and Jakob Prandtauer, the site is perhaps best known for its deep musical soul. The legendary composer Anton Bruckner served as the organist here, and he is buried directly beneath the monumental "Bruckner Organ" in the basilica. Beyond the music, the interiors are a masterclass in 18th-century opulence, featuring a Marble Hall adorned with frescoes and a library containing 130,000 volumes beneath an intricately painted ceiling. For those seeking quietude, the monastery still functions as a working guesthouse, offering a rare chance to stay within the same walls that once sheltered the anchoress Wilbirg in the 13th century.
