Altstadt.
Salzburg’s UNESCO-listed Altstadt is a remarkably preserved historic core on the left bank of the Salzach River, built for exploring entirely on foot. Rather than feeling like a sterile open-air museum, this compact maze of cobblestone alleys and grand Baroque squares remains a lively urban neighborhood. Its main artery is the Getreidegasse, a narrow shopping street famous for its wrought-iron guild signs and Mozart’s Birthplace at No. 9. Within a few minutes' walk, visitors can transition from the medieval fabric of the Alter Markt to the grand scale of the Salzburg Cathedral and Residenzplatz. Looming constantly overhead is the Hohensalzburg Fortress, providing a dramatic backdrop to an area where centuries-old inns, traditional workshops, and daily Austrian life seamlessly coexist.
