The Landesgalerie Niederösterreich stands as a sharp, sculptural counterpoint to the historic skyline of Krems. Designed by Marte.Marte Architekten, the building is wrapped in a "skin" of zinc shingles that twist upward, creating a warped, hyper-modern silhouette that anchors the city’s Art Mile. Inside, 3,000 square meters of exhibition space are spread across five levels, balancing the vast Provincial Collections of Lower Austria with rotating contemporary showcases. While the architecture feels intentionally provocative, glass arches at the base and strategic upper-level windows offer framed views of the Danube and the surrounding old town, grounding the gallery in its geographic context. It functions as both a prestigious regional archive and a venue for international art, bridging the gap between Lower Austria’s deep history and its modern creative ambitions.
